What is Balayage

Balayage is a French hand-painting technique where colour is applied freehand directly onto sections of hair — no foils, no strict sections. The result is a graduated, sun-kissed effect with soft, natural-looking dimension. Because the colour is concentrated on the mid-lengths and ends rather than at the root, regrowth grows out seamlessly without a harsh line, making balayage one of the lowest-maintenance colour techniques available.

Balayage at Cole Hair Studio

At Cole Hair Studio, balayage is our signature service. It's what we're known for, it's what we're best at, and it's what fills our books — clients who come in for balayage tend to stay with us for years.

Every colourist on our Double Bay team is trained directly by Frankie, Cole Hair Studio's director. Frankie's career spans celebrity clients and editorial work for major global publications. That expertise doesn't stay with one stylist. It's embedded into how every member of our team works.

What that means for you: whoever you book with, you're getting a specialist. Not a general hairdresser who occasionally does colour. A colourist who has spent years perfecting the art of balayage on every hair type and tone.

We also know your time matters. Our Double Bay salon has a co-working setup — bring your laptop, take calls, clear your inbox. Your hair appointment doesn't have to cost you a productive afternoon.e, making balayage one of the lowest-maintenance colour techniques available.

What to Expect at Your First Balayage Appointment

1. Consultation

Every new colour client starts with a consultation. We will look at your hair in the light, talk through what you are hoping to achieve, and be honest about what is realistic for your hair type, condition, and starting colour.

2. Colour Application

Your colourist applies the balayage freehand — no caps, no strict sections. The placement is customised to your face shape, hair texture, and the look you are going for. Most appointments: 2–3 hours.

3. Toning

After the colour processes, we apply a custom toner to refine the final result — controlling warmth or coolness and adding gloss and depth.

4. Style and Finish

Your appointment finishes with a blow-dry or style. We will also recommend an at-home care routine to protect your colour investment between visits.

Balayage Maintenance and Aftercare

Balayage grows out gradually without a harsh line at the root.

How often to rebook: Most clients return every 10-12 weeks for a toner refresh.

Aftercare:

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo to preserve colour vibrancy

  • Apply a bond-building treatment once a week

  • Avoid chlorine without protection

  • Protect from heat with a thermal spray before styling

  • My balayage came out exactly how I wanted — natural, gorgeous and low maintenance. The team made me feel so welcome from the moment I walked in.

Frequently Asked Balayage Questions

  • Balayage typically lasts 3–6 months before a full colour refresh is needed. Because the colour is concentrated on the mid-lengths and ends rather than applied at the root, regrowth grows out without a harsh line.

  • Classic balayage at Cole Hair Studio Double Bay starts from $475. The final price depends on your hair length, thickness, and the complexity of the result. Pricing is confirmed at your consultation — there are no surprises on the day.

  • Yes. Balayage works on all hair colours including dark brunette and black hair. Dark hair requires a lightening step before toning and may need multiple sessions to reach lighter shades safely

  • Foil highlights are applied in sections using foils, creating defined uniform streaks from root to tip. Balayage is applied freehand with no foils, concentrated on mid-lengths and ends, creating a softer graduated result. Balayage grows out more naturally — making it lower maintenance.

  • For new clients, yes — especially for significant colour changes or if your hair has been previously bleached or coloured at home. Consultations at Cole Hair Studio Double Bay are complimentary.
